Workshop/Open Studio On Monhegan Island, ME

 I have been very remiss in updating my blog but with the change of season, and summer approaching, I should get back on board with it.
 The studio is in full swing with activity. The winter's work was delivered to my galleries and I am busily getting summer work ready for my open studio. I added two drawing classes at Phoenix Village Art Center. Drawing has always been my first love and I was really pleased to have the chance to teach it again. Phoenixville, PA has undergone a renaissance in the past 8 years or so with tons of businesses opening up with Phoenix Village Art Center in the heart of it. If you are local, please go check it out.
  I am also getting things ready for my annual open studio/workshop with fellow artist Bradley Hendershot on Monhegan Island, ME. If you haven't heard of it, Monhegan is a little island off the mid coast of Maine. It's been an artist colony for almost 150 years. Lots of artists have parked their easels there for the summer. I have been painting there for almost 10 years now and it doesn't get old. This year, Brad and I are teaching two workshops:

Plein Air Workshop - July 7-10 9am-3pm
This class is a plein air oil painting workshop that will focus on light and using a limited palette. We start at 9am at the studio with a short description/review of the plan for the day. Then we go and paint at one of the many locations. I gear this class for beginner and intermediate painters. We have a good time and at the same time, take away new skills to use in future paintings. A list of suggested materials is provided.
Cost of the class: $375.00

SuperSmall Workshop! - July 14, 15, 16 9am-4pm
Back by popular demand. I held this class last year and it was really well received. Oil and watercolor are welcome. This 3 day class is all about strong starts. Composition, sketching on location and getting an idea down quickly will be the center of our efforts. A great opportunity to hone skills that can be applied to any plein air medium. This class is limited to only 5 participants. A suggested materials list is provided.
Cost: $250

  Newsletter October 2021 Hello Everyone, and Happy Autumn from Katy and Brad! Here at Hoppenville House, the last of the butternut and buttercup squash has been picked, and a few tomatoes and peppers are hanging in there. Soon, it’s time to rototill and put the garden plot to bed for the Winter. The grass has been given its Fall fertilizer treatment and the last cut of the year looms near. The leaves are beginning their Autumn display of colour and mornings have been cool as we await our first frost. Most of the summer perennials have been cut back and the Fall bloomers stand alone in our gardens. We both enjoy our gardens, the warm weather, and relaxing on the back porch. But, we also look forward to the gradual cooldown that proceeds Winter. We will certainly have more time in the studio and are looking ahead to our next couple of events. Hey, Look What I Built! And It Works, Too! "Society Finch"      5x7"       oil Greetings from the studio and happy spring!  Spring is a season that is full of awakenings and new beginnings. I have been enjoying my adventures in oil painting. "Society Finch" is a recent work that is a change from the still life I was making with somber, dark backgrounds emphasis placed on chiaroscuro. I wanted a more open, delicate feel to compliment the subject of the bird. Society finches are not found in the wild and were bred to be companion pets. Hence the choice of domestic items to place with him. I don't own a finch so I spent a lot of time in the local pet store watching them and I am pretty sure the employees now think I am some bird stalking lunatic that has no life. And to that I say ...
