Winter Greetings! This week finds us in the studio with the first snowstorm of 2021 happening outside the windows. So, naturally, we felt it was time to send out announcements about our upcoming spring online classes. We are very pleased with the response to the online instruction and are looking to enhance our offerings. At the start of Covid we had no idea what online teaching was all about, and the learning curve was steep, but it’s been great to see people from all over North America in our classes! Thank you for all the support! It is greatly appreciated! Please find the course descriptions and days offered below: |

KATY'S CLASSESNEW!!! LIGHT IN THE LANDSCAPEWhat is the most important characteristic of color? Hue? Value? Chroma? In this class we will break light into its major characteristics and apply this to constructing a painting. We will focus on recognizing the shapes of shadows and the behavior of light to create a more believable scene with a successful mood. Observe light in the landscape and make a plan! Is it an evening scene with long shadows? Is it a high key painting to describe high noon? Do you need to lower chroma to describe soft diffused light in a foggy or overcast day? Each class will center on one or two concepts which will be the basis for assignments. Critique will be offered by instructor. NEW!!! BEAUTIFUL BIRDSA great way to welcome spring! "Beautiful Birds" will center around painting birds in nature as well as in still life. Noticing the differences between species, anatomy, texture and composition will be the themes covered. Examples will be presented and concepts broken down for each class and will form the basis for assignments. Critique will be offered by instructor. |
BRAD'S CLASSESNEW!!! TEXTURE TECHNIQUES II: TEXTURE AND BEYONDThis course is the second in a series of classes designed to work with texture techniques. Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors I is a prerequisite for this course. The course expands on what was covered in the first course, and includes selecting a subject, developing an idea, and composing a great painting. Texture techniques will be further developed with emphasis placed on incorporation into finished paintings rather than a series of exercises. Course topics will include preliminary works; composition and the development of ideas with the goal of good design in the finished painting; defining the subject and the focus; the pursuit of mood and feeling and the reason for the painting; and the overall harmony of the painting. Part of each class will be devoted to instructor and group critique and exchange of ideas. This is a lecture/demo course. Real-time painting during the class is NOT recommended. Rather, observation and note-taking during the class, with individual work and practice being done during the week following each class is suggested. TEXTURE TECHNIQUES FOR WINNING WATERCOLORS IThis course is the first in a series of classes designed to work with texture techniques developed by, and used by, Brad's father (Ray Hendershot, 1931-2019, AWS, NWS) and Brad, and outlined in his book “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors” (North Light Books, Cincinnati, 1999). As Ray said in the book, “We are all familiar with the precept ‘One of the most important things you can learn about painting is knowing when to stop.’ I submit to you that, for fear of overworking a painting, many learning artists tend to stop too soon, neglecting those extra little touches that can elevate an acceptable watercolor painting to the level of an outstanding watercolor painting.” This is a lecture/demo course. Real-time painting during the class is NOT recommended. Rather, observation and note-taking during the class, with individual work and practice being done during the week following each class is suggested. |
